Glamourpuss

My good friend Susan Becker sent Sloane the most glamourous baby outfit that I have ever laid eyes on.

Bassinet? What bassinet?

don't worry, I know about SIDS risks - she doesn't actually get to sleep in our bed, I only let her do it when I'm awake and in the room to watch her.

Baby's First Opera

Last night, Sloane accompanied the New York Metropolitan Opera in their performance of Gounod's Faust in Brookdale Park, part of their Opera in the Parks series. John thought that Sloane was a soprano, but I heard distinct lower tones in her cries. Luckily, we sat near a lot of other families with infants, so Sloane was not the only one crying.

She actually fell asleep after about a half hour and we enjoyed the first half of the performance. We decided not to tempt fate and left at intermission, around 10 pm.

Bye Bye, Grandma and Grandpa

My parents have been here since Friday. It's been heaven - both for John and I, because they insisted on letting us sleep and because they acted as free manual labor (despite my protests, my mother did laundry, cleaned the cat litter and various other household chores, and my father basically turned our embarassingly overgrown yard into something we were not ashamed of), and for Sloane, because she is mesmerized by them.

Pediatrician Update

At 9 weeks, Sloane weighs in at 10 pounds, 13 ounces and 23.25 inches. She's 50th percentile for weight, 88th percentile for height and 55th percentile for head circumference.

She also got her second set of immunizations, which was harder on me than on her. She was a trooper, going to sleep after two quick yelps when they gave her three shots to the thighs. I was an absolute wreck, not wanting her to suffer.

She had a slight fever afterwards, but after a little infant Tylenol, she was fine. What a good little girl!

This one is not of Sloane, but I couldn't resist - it's a baby panda sneezing.

A New Development

I don't know if it was the ending of The Soprano's that did it. I don't know what it was, but we have a new development...

For the first time in two months, I have use of both my arms at the same time! How can this be, you ask? Isn't it true that Her Royal Grumpiness, Princess LaLa, the Tyrannical Ruler of the Land of the Las, does not allow her loyal subjects (mainly Mommy and Daddy, but soon to be Babushka Janet and Dedushka Boris) to have use of both arms at the same time?

I offer rebuttal evidence:

Sleepy face

Sleep... SLEEP!!! Oh yes, yes, yesssssssssss!!!

Princess LaLa went to sleep last night at about 9:00 pm after several hours of fussiness and refusing to take her usual 3 pm to 6 pm nap.

Uh-oh, John and I both knew, knew, that it was going to be a long fussy night ahead because an overtired almost-two month old who didn't get her nap... well, we all know what that means, right?

WRONG!

At 2 am, LaLa still hadn't stirred. By this point we'd already thrown away a whole bottle of formula because we had poured it at about midnight in anticipation of her waking up hungry, cranky and screaming. Finally at 2:35 am, I made a bottle, changed the diaper and fed a very sleepy, barely awake LaLa. She burped and went right back down by 2:55 am. I think she only opened one eye the whole time.

John and I kept checking her breathing to make sure she was OK. She then slept until almost 6 am when she woke, opened one eye, drank a bottle and went right back down, not to stir again until 8 am.

Yes, you read that right -- 8 AM!

Who is this blissful sleeping child and can we keep her?

Sock Hands

Sloane is hell bent on clawing out her own eyes, so we practice "sock hands", something she does not like and does not hesitate to let us know that she does not like it.

No pictures today

In practicing tummy time today, I put Sloane down in her crib, on her tummy, and walked away for about 30 seconds to rinse the bottle in the bathroom sink. What do I see when I return? Sloane, a good 8 inches down from where she started. That's right, my seven and half week old itty bitty baby scooched herself backwards by eight inches.

Definitely not expected, but cool nonetheless.

Sloane's day out

Yesterday, we went to watch my team play at the Goals For Life Charity Soccer Tournament. This is a great event that raises money to fund mammograms for needy women without health insurance. I've played ever year since we moved up to New Jersey, but alas, since I had a c-section, the tournament was out this year. My team actually won its division for the first time ever, winning two games and tying one.

Sloane was, as usual a perfect child, not even a whimper out of her the whole afternoon.

Afterwards, we went to Babies R Us to get more formula and start getting a sense of what we will need to childproof the house - argh (I went to an infant safety seminar a couple of weeks ago and they really scared me that this house is a child death trap!). Babies R Us has a "Mother's Room," so rather than rush home, I used it to feed Sloane. She was a champ until it came time to change the diaper.

As some of you know, Her Royal Grumpiness adamantly does NOT like to have her diaper changed. She expressed her displeasure at this turn of events by simultaneously expelling from both ends... twice. It was pretty amusing.

All in all, she's really terrific when we go out anywhere.

Week 7 - Sleeping in her "Fight the Power" pose

Today, Sloane made her first word-like sounds - amazing. We now get gummy, toothless grins and little giggles. She also grabs at things, though she can't yet control her hands enough to actually grab anything. It's amazing how much she changes from week to week and day to day.
