Toddler Illustrated: Swimsuit Edition

A few weeks ago, we got Sloane a real swimsuit for next summer (size 3T) because it was on clearance as end-of-the-season. Since we were headed to the pool, we thought she should try it on. Surprisingly, it fit perfectly lengthwise (though as you can see it's huge in width). She hammed it up for the camera and I swear not one of these pictures was posed. What can I say -- she knows how to work a camera, the little munchkin!

We couldn't figure out what in the world she was doing at first, but then it hit us... she was recreating the mats that they use at daycare for circle time (stories and songs) and also the cots that they use at nap time. By the way, these are placemats that she swiped off the dining room table:

Busy Day

Today was rainy and yucky, so we did indoor things. We went to the Imagine It! Children's Museum which, though expensive, was a huge hit and then went to Decatur to get a much needed haircut.

See why we so desperately needed a haircut?

After the haircut:

Is it me or does she look like a kindergartner (well, except for the binky... Her Royal Highness is cutting a whopping ten or so molars at once - three on each side on top and two on each side on bottom and has clung to that binky like there's no tomorrow)??

Where is my baby?

(don't worry, the medicine bottle is empty)

Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh my!

Sloane and daddy went to the zoo with mommy's friend Masha and her daughter Katie.

Sloane was agog at all the fabulous animals. All animals do still fall into three categories: dog, duck or cat.

Clown Shoes

Today, Sloane ate skirt steak, brussel sprouts, broccoli pancake, whole wheat macaroni and cheese and apple sauce. All in one meal! Now she also knows how to say "yummy" and her new favorite "uh-oh." Plus, she discovered the joy that is STICKERS! Oh, and she's obsessed with trying on mommy and daddy's shoes, with hilarious results:

Sixteen Months

Dear Lolli,

Mommy is a bit behind on your monthly letter because Grandma and Grandpa were here this weekend visiting you.

This month has been a really happy one with you as you have mostly started eating. Mommy quakes with fear for having just jinxed this month of good eating by typing those words. You also cut four molars and learned the value of the all-out toddler temper tantrum, complete with throwing yourself on the floor and kicking your legs while peeling paint off the walls with your high-pitched shrieking.

But mostly, you've been a lovely little girl who charms anyone within smiling distance of your beautiful eyes and sweet temperament. Your new day care teachers love you.

I'm going to stop here and just close this month's letter with some funny pictures.

You're the best little person in the whole, big world, and your daddy and I adore you.

Linguine in Clam Sauce Was a Hit

Sunday, August 10, 2008

We had brunch today with an old friend from when I was a kid. I had not seen Masha since she was in high school and I was in early college. It has to have been at least 16 years, maybe longer.

Anyway, Masha and her husband Harry and their adorable 13 month old, Katie came intown to have brunch with us this morning. The girls didn't seem to notice one another too much (at this age, they really don't have a concept of friends yet, but it will come!), but the adults had a great time.

The Pasta Murderess of Atlanta

Today was Sloane's first day at her new daycare and she seemed to enjoy it, though she didn't eat much from all the excitement. Instead, she went nuts over the pasta that daddy made for her when she got home. She ate an adult sized portion of pasta, but threw all the organic, lovingly-prepared turkey meatballs on the floor. At least the cats ate well.

Sweeping Sloane and the Adventure of the Many Molars

We had an eight-hour power failure last night for no good reason... there was about 15 minutes of ominous rain and thunder and then it passed and voila... we were without power until 3 am. It makes us nervous for our future relationship with Georgia Power. Are we going to be without power for hours at a time every time the earth sneezes a bit?

Anyway, while trying to get a fussy and hot toddler off to bed (no air conditioning without electricity, remember?), I actually got a few fingers in the mouth. The little Munchkin hasn't allowed anyone to violate the sanctity of those gums in about a month. I was shocked to feel not one, not two, not three, but four new teeth. All molars and all only barely through. Which, of course, means we have a lot more painful teething ahead of us. Poor munchkin!

Here's a video of Sloane "helping" us sweep this morning after breakfast.
